Operation Food Recovery, Volume 1: Red Lentils

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

We have exciting news for all of our customers. We’re going to be offering some truly special grains like red lentils, dried fruits, nuts, and more to help round out your box each week. Just imagine the non-produce aisles of the grocery store, delivered to your door. Not only are these ingredients going to help your next meal be easier and healthier to put together, but they’re also powerful ways for you to expand the impact of your Imperfect box and help reduce food waste beyond the world of fruits and vegetables. What do we mean?

A great example is our red lentils. We got in touch with an organic grain company in Montana whose growers had harvested over 250,000 pounds of lentils for a big buyer, only to have the buyer downsize their order at the last minute. This left them with more product than they had planned for. Once we heard their story, we happily agreed to help find a home for these lentils. It just made so much sense. Now the grain company can recover all of the costs they put into growing them, you get to enjoy wonderful lentils at home at a great price, and we all get to work towards a more flexible and sustainable food system where nutritious food doesn’t end up stuck in purgatory for no good reason.

Keep an eye out for awesome items like these lentils, plus roasted almonds, quinoa, and dried fruits the next time you customize your box. They are also all surplus items that might have otherwise have been discarded due to a lack of demand, so by buying them, you’re helping provide financial security to growers, companies, and co-ops that face a huge amount of uncertainty with every changing season. We’re excited to offer you a great deal on these items that are often quite expensive on the grocery shelf. When you try them out, be sure to let us know what you think!

It would be nice if you would consider giving us some recipes as to how to use the lentils.
